Reaching the Deku Tree

The Kokiri Sword

After the introductory cutscene you’ll be able to take control of Link and walk outside your house. After meeting Saria, climb down the ladder leading to your doorway and start making your way west towards a small ramp. Follow this up and navigate or climb over the fence maze to a small hole in the opposite wall. If you place yourself in front of the hole your A button icon should change to say “Enter” and you can press it to begin crawling through the hole.

The Hole of Z

Once through the hole you’ll find yourself in a small maze of sorts with a boulder rolling around. Do your best to avoid this boulder and make your way through the small patch of grass. Run down the center of it to collect two green rupees and turn left at the end to follow the boulder’s path. At the next intersection take a right to find the chest containing the Kokiri Sword.

With the sword in hand you can make your way back out of this little maze, but there are some more rupees you’ll want to grab first. If you wait for the boulder to pass and head left when facing away from the chest you’ll see a blue rupee next to some grass down the way. Grab this and use your sword to cut away the grass for a chance at some more rupees. Once you have that, you’ll want to head left down the pathway after the boulder passes again. You should see another blue rupee near another thing of grass so do the same thing because you’re going to need some money to get yourself a nice shield. Exit back through the hole you entered through when you’re finished.

Deku Shield

You should have at least 12 rupees at this point, but you’re going to need 40 in order to buy yourself a shield. You can complete some of the things in the small training ground near where you got the Kokiri Sword for some easy money.

  • Target the rock next to the Kokiri and do a backflip for 5-6 rupees (depending where you backflip).
  • Cut the bushes for chances at rupee drops.
  • Use a stab attack on one of the signs for 5 rupees.

There are several other places where you can get some easy money as well:

  • The house directly across the bottom of the ramp has 4 chests in it with a total of 11 rupees and a recovery heart.
  • Behind this house is another blue rupee (5) sitting out in the open.
  • Running through the short grass will get you 2 rupees in each one for 4 total.
  • Jumping across the small blocks in the water will get you 5 rupees. You can repeat this as many times as you’d like by entering and exiting a building to reset it.
  • There’s 5 rupees hidden in the Kokiri Shop to the side of the counter.

Once you have at least 40 rupees head to the Kokiri Shop, marked by a girl sitting on the roof of it, and buy yourself a Kokiri Shield for 40 rupees. You can buy some other things if you want with any excess rupees you have, but I wouldn’t really recommend it. With your new shield acquired you can head back out of the shop.

To the Deku Tree

Be sure your sword and shield are equipped, then head over to talk to Mido, who is guarding the pathway to the Deku Tree so he can feel important. He’ll be shocked that you have a Deku Shield and the Kokiri Sword, but he’ll let you pass. On the pathway there will be 3 deku babas that pop up in your way. Kill these for some Deku sticks and continue down the path. Once you finish speaking with the Deku Tree you are free to enter through his now open mouth and take on your first dungeon of the game.
