Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly

Princess Ruto

We recommend equipping the deku shield for this dungeon. As you approach the shallow pool two octoroks will pop up and shoot rocks at you. You can reflect these back with your deku shield to defeat them. The other enemies in here are the bubbles called shaboms. These you can slash with your sword, or even just defeat with a deku nut. When you feel safe to do so, use your slingshot to activate the white switch on the ceiling.

You can ignore everything in this room for now and just continue around the ledge into the next room. When you reach the open area you’ll see Princess Ruto, who will immediately begin telling you off for coming to rescue her. Follow her down the hole she stumbles into and speak with her again. When she finishes talking, start another conversation and she will give you the honor of carrying her, so delightful! She’ll then sit down on the floor where you can pick her up. Do so and head through the door nearby.

Boomerang

Dodge the shaboms in the hallway or set Ruto down and destroy them and you’ll find another small pool of water. Avoid stepping on the switch here while carrying Ruto and instead toss her up onto the other side of the pit. When she’s safely up you can step on the switch to raise the water and get yourself over. If you accidentally step on the switch while carrying Ruto and she disappears you can head back to where you first found her and collect her again.

Once Ruto is safely on the other side of the pit you can use your slingshot to shoot the gold skulltula on the vine-like object. Once the water is raised you can climb up and collect the token.

Pick Ruto back up on the other side of the pit and head down the hallway. There’s another switch on the ceiling you’ll need to activate to unlock the door here. Now you can try to toss Ruto at it for a little revenge if you want, or use the slingshot after putting her down. On the other side of the door is an octorok in the water. Use your shield to deflect the rock it spits at you and wait for the platform to come down. Ride it up with Ruto and take the door to the right near the two small boxes to return to where you first encountered her.

In here you’ll want to avoid all the biri and the holes in the floor as you cross. If you do happen to fall there is a climbable wall that you can take back to the top where Ruto will thankfully be waiting, even if she fell with you.

Once you’ve made it through the door you’ll want to take the right path. Dodge the tailpasaran as you carry Ruto down the hall and jump up onto the switch. Navi will tell you it doesn’t look like you can press it down alone, but that’s why you’ve got Ruto! Head into the room that unlocked and you’ll encounter three stingers – four if not playing on 3DS. You can walk over them so they’ll pop up into the air, then dispatch them with your slingshot from there. When they’re all defeated a chest containing the boomerang will appear.

Slimy Things

With the boomerang in hand grab Ruto again and down the hallway directly opposite where you’ll find a blue floor switch. This switch won’t stay down like other switches, so you’ll have to leave Ruto on it to keep the door open.

Inside the door you’ll find a parasitic tentacle hanging from the ceiling. Target the narrow point and hit it with your boomerang. Once it’s hit it will retract into the ceiling. In order to get it to come down so you can hit it again you’ll need to step closer to it. Keep circling around it while it swings at you and then hit it with your boomerang again. After four hits the tentacle should crumble and a chest will appear. Open it for the dungeon map if you’d like and head back out the door.

Ruto will scold you for being inconsiderate, but then immediately sit down for you to carry her again so I guess it’s not that big of a deal. Pick her up and head to the opposite hallway once again.

After defeating the red parasitic tentacle the hallway to the left of the blue switch is unobstructed. Head through the door there and defeat the shabombs inside in 40 seconds – deku nuts work best here – to uncover the chest containing the compass.

To the left of the switch you pressed earlier you’ll see you can make it down the hallway now. Go through the door here and defeat the blue parasitic tentacle within. With that out of the way you’ll need to return to the intersection of all the hallways where the three tailsparan are. This time head down the long central hall that’s no longer blocked and you’ll find a green parasitic tentacle surrounded by four biri. It’s easiest to defeat the biri with the boomerang first, then take care of this tentacle. With the final tentacle defeated it’s time to return to the room where we first met Ruto.

Now you’ll need to drop down the hole closest to the west wall since the green slimy thing is gone. Head down the hallway connected to the ledge you land on and through the door.

After defeating the green parasitic tentacle and dropping down through the floor where it was there is a gold skulltula on the wall directly above the ledge. Use the slingshot or boomerang to defeat it and collect the token with the boomerang.

After going through the door Ruto will spot what she’s been looking for. Toss her up onto the platform and she’ll grab the Spiritual Stone, then immediately get taken upstairs. After a brief conversation the platform will descend once more and the fight with the Big Octo will begin.

Big Octo

Big Octo can only take damage from the glowing spot on its back, which can make the fight a little tricky. You’ll need to stun it with the boomerang to cause it to be vulnerable as well. One option is to try stunning it with the boomerang and hope it’s facing away from you when it gets stunned. A faster option is to run into Big Octo intentionally. This will cause it to immediately turn around and head the other direction. You can stun it immediately this way and do a jump slash to maximize the damage you deal. This way will cause you to take a half-heart of damage each time though so be careful! After two jump slashes or four normal slashes it should die and allow you to ride the central platform upstairs.

Reaching the Boss

With the big octo defeated you can step onto the central platform and reach upstairs. There are three pots up here containing deku nuts and a fairy if you need them. Go through the door and you’ll find a room with two pink tofu-like wiggly enemies. Head into the shallow water first to deal with the octorok so it doesn’t complicate the next part. With it out of the way you can use the boomerang to stun the first pink tofu. Jump onto it and stun the second one quickly so you can reach the door.

Jump across to the platform which will cause it to lower and connect with the platform below. There’s a blue switch in front of you that’s keeping the door locked, but you have no Ruto this time. Fortunately where the platform connected there are two small boxes. Grab one and set it on the switch to hold it down and continue through the door.

In here you may want to take out all the biri with the boomerang to make it a little easier. With them all out of the way you can safely climb the central pillar to the top. From here you can target the switch around the wall and use the boomerang to hit it and open the door to Barinade.

In the room right before Barinade there is a gold skulltula on the vine on the eastern side of the pillar. Use the boomerang or slingshot to defeat it, then climb the vines or use the boomerang to collect the token.

Dungeon Boss: Barinade

Barinade is a fairly simple four phase fight that we’ll break down by each phase. The fight will begin with it attaching several jellyfish to itself as a sort of armor. If you ever need health during this fight you can break one of the pots around the room for a heart.

Phase One

This phase is very straightforward. Simply target the three tentacles latched onto the ceiling and destroy them using your boomerang while dodging the blasts of electricity the monster fires at you. Once all three have been severed phase two will begin.

Phase Two

With the tentacles severed Barinade will drop into the floor slightly and release a wave of jellyfish to attack you. Throw your boomerang at Barinade to stun it and stop the jellyfish from spinning around. While the jellyfish are stationary you can pick them off with your boomerang, or even better, deku nuts! Once the five jellyfish have been destroyed phase three will start.

Phase Three

With one layer of its armor stripped away, Barinade will surface and spin the remaining jellyfish around itself very fast while chasing you. You need to wait for it to get tired, indicated by there being no electricity connected to the jellyfish, before you can throw your boomerang to stun Barinade. Take out the jellyfish the same way as you did in phase two to start phase four.

Phase Four

The final phase of the encounter is just an enraged Barinade chasing you around trying to hit you with its rapidly spinning body and shooting electricity at you. All you need to do is stun it with the boomerang and slash away while it’s vulnerable. Use Jumpslashes here to maximize your damage before it retreats underground. While it’s beneath the ground you can’t damage it and it will continue shooting electricity at you. Dodge these until it comes back up and repeat the same steps. It should take three or four cycles to vanquish Barinade.

Collect your heart container from the boss and step into the blue light where Ruto is waiting. She’ll scold you some more before you’re teleported out of the dungeon. After a short cutscene you’ll receive the Zora’s Sapphire, meaning you now have all three spiritual stones and can return to princess Zelda. Congratulations on conquering Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly!
